We are now living in an age of fantastic technological advancements inside the visual technology fields. Photo camera models renew themselves every year with all the promise of more mega-pixels and extra features. Yet, when we consider it as it were, the photo links beyond all of our video cameras many times has weaknesses and strengths that persist through each of the successive appliances experience our hands.

Digital camera models plus general all photographic cameras are, despite every one of the marketing buzz, still not a lot of machines. For instance, they register our society with sensors that may only capture a small fraction of the tonal range that the eyes can perceive.

Imagine your self a sunny day in front of a lovely landscape. Below you, around you, you can view the rich lush green vegetation; above you, the intense blue skies. As we contemplate this scene, our eyes can perceive all of its richness, information in both the shadows and also the bright clouds above. The dynamic range that our eyes can process, which goes in the darkest to the brightest areas, is enough to contain most of the rich detail for the reason that scene.

Now bring your photo camera and snap a trial from the position including the vegetation along with the sky. The result is very telling. With respect to the parameters that either the digital camera or you choose, some detail in the scene will disappear from the result. Either aspects of the vegetation will blend to black and lose all detail or areas of the sky will blend to white and lose all detail.

To conclude, the retina in the camera, its digital sensor, which captures the light in the scene, is not able to handling a tonal range as big as our eyes can. It can only capture the total detail in a smaller range which can be positioned at different amounts of brightness from the camera itself or us. For that, within a scene such as the one described above that has a very large contrast, it winds up capturing the detail limited to the highlights and mid-tones, or mainly on the mid-tones, or mainly at the shadows and mid-tones. It really cannot capture simultaneously the total detail from the scene in the darkest towards the brightest areas.

This really is of course a simplification of the scenario that we could describe in far more detail. However the conclusion remains the same. Once we go through the final photo, we realize that what we should remember seeing with the eyes is just not what are the photo shows. That richness of detail everywhere is gone. And that is one among the limitations that all Photo cameras share. We will go on to describe numerous others in connection with color precision and other locations where cameras just cannot deal with the depth and richness around the globe around us.
